When the old First Watch in Webster Groves closed, it made perfect sense for another breakfast restaurant to take its spot. With little kitchen work and a large open dining room, our friends at Half and Half jumped on the opportunity to open their second location. Our task was to translate Half and Half’s New England farmhouse aesthetic to this space while creating a new bar, hostess stand, and a variety of seating options for guests.

To make the space look less corporate and more cozy, our team replaced the plain ceiling tiles with recessed-panel acoustical tiles. Walls were clad in a whitewashed paneling, and the worn carpet tiles were replaced with a restaurant-friendly wood-look acoustical luxury vinyl plank. To further warm up the space, our team devised a pine “trellis” to contain a series of booths in the center of the restaurant. The Douglas fir trellis extends towards the bar, and provides support for a bar-height dining table that also serves as a creamer station for waiting guests to fix up their coffees. This bar-height table and the bar are made of reclaimed 200-year-old longleaf pine. Our craftsmen also made the enormous spoon behind the hostess stand, the wood ribbon on the ceiling along the storefront, and the pine dining tables that were paired with black Windsor-style dining chairs.

In the entry vestibule, we cut a service window into the wall for “Coffee To Go,” so busy customers can stop for a quick cup of joe in the mornings. Next to the window, we made a wall-mounted creamer and trash station so these guests will not need to go inside the restaurant for creamer or sugar.
