Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital

It doesn’t look like a hospital, does it? That’s the idea.

At Ranken Jordan, the SPACE team used architecture to lift the spirits of children with complex medical conditions. The whimsical, playground-like hospital features open spaces to encourage interaction among patients, medical teams, and families. Lead Architect Steve Hunsicker and Project Manager Elizabeth Kohl created community spaces – including a theraputic pool, indoor and outdoor exploratory areas, observation tower, occupational therapy kitchen, and therapy “gyms” – that engage children consistent with Ranken Jordan’s healing philosophy, which encourages children to get out of their rooms and participate in everyday activities. In short, kids should have the chance to be kids regardless of their medical condition.

By reconsidering all the traditional areas of the hospital, the design team produced dynamic spaces that encourage socialization, and ultimately, healing. Steve and Elizabeth guided Ranken Jordan through every step of the design and construction of the 60,000 sq ft, $15 million ultramodern facility. The new Ranken Jordan hospital is the only specialty pediatric rehabilitation hospital in Missouri and one of only five of its kind in the country.
