It’s very easy to be different, but very difficult to be better. – Jonathan Ive
The greatest satisfaction, I think, is when a building opens and the public possesses it and you cut the umbilical cord and you see it taking on its own life. There’s no greater satisfaction. – Moshe Safdie
Favorite Sandwich: Anything Vinnie builds me at Blues City Deli.
Inspired By: Eero Saarenin’s breadth of work. Every project results in a thoughtful design solution that is particular to that problem, that client, that place. Preconceived solutions had no place on his drawing board. It is impressive that one hand generated the diversity and complexity of the Miller Residence, John Deere World Headquarters and The Gateway Arch.
Something weird or unusual about you: When living in Guatemala, I was taught how to change a tire by digging a hole under a truck.
Favorite space in St. Louis: Looking up at the sky through the canted Cor-Ten walls of Richard Serra’s “Joe” sculpture at the Pulitzer. Always a dizzying and fulfilling gaze.
Confession: We had to buy an extra house just to have a suitable wood shop, studio and a place for our kayaks (we are a family of 4 but are a 5 boat family)
Nickname: “jayreeves“ – one word. (even my nickname is long winded)
