“I have chosen to return to SPACE after a 6 year hiatus because of the quality work being produced and its unique design-led design-build process. It can be difficult to execute a high-quality project when one is only able to control the drawing set.  But with design-build, the project manager oversees the entire process: design, documentation, bidding, construction, and fabrication. This control makes it much easier to implement a concept, by maintaining the critical aspects and cutting other components if needed in order to meet the budget. The concept of Contractors, Fabricators, and Designers working together to inspire and challenge each other is what keeps me excited about design.”

I have been practicing architecture, design, fabrication, and construction for 12 years now, at all scales in and around the Midwest region.

I have always been intrigued by the design-build process with the focus on design….or to me the concept of master builder.  I attempt to design with a better understanding of construction, detailing, materials, labor, and costs, not with the goal of making a cheap building, but for the purpose of building more thoughtful projects that may not have unlimited budgets (but I’ll take those too).

I currently reside with my wife and two children in Webster Groves where we recently completed a gut rehab/addition to our second home. My original plan was to act as the Architect and General Contractor; unfortunately, due to a limited budget, I also ended up being a demo contractor, carpenter, steel fabricator, finish carpenter, flooring installer, etc!  Way too much, but it’s finally finished! Or at least good enough for now…

My experiences are (but interests are not limited to):

Inspired By: Regional design awards. I love seeing quality work designed and built around the Midwest.
Favorite Architect: I don’t have a favorite architect, but I have much respect for GLUCK+
Favorite Store: Home Depot. I have a slight addiction to tools and projects around the house.
Favorite Quote: “Wherefore the mere practical architect is not able to assign sufficient reasons for the forms he adopts; and the theoretic architect also fails, grasping the shadow instead of the substance.” Vitruvius
If Money Were No Object, I would: Hang out with my wife and kids, travel, relax, share more time with my kids, make things, furniture, art, homes, and buildings.
Favorite Hobby: Mountain Biking. I’ve been riding for 15 years, and I love being out in the woods with friends or by myself. Also love the aspect of work/reward (climb/downhill) that comes with it.  I’m certainly not a pro, but I love all the challenges. My favorite time to be out is in the early morning in the spring, or late afternoon in the fall.
