Curtain Call Lounge
at the Fabulous Fox Theatre

The owners of The Fabulous Fox Theatre wanted to open the city’s first champagne bar in the storefront to the south of the theatre. The space was rough, most recently serving as storage space for the theatre’s catering operations. The owners wanted the new champagne lounge to speak to the theatre’s grand “Siamese-Byzantine” style, while incorporating flexible space for special events, a large bar, and a stage for small musical performances. The owners also wanted gold palm trees and a look that referenced both Rick’s Cafe Americain and LA’s legendary Cocoanut Grove nightclub.

The space had some beautiful bones: sections of elaborate crown moulding and high ceilings, but it was small, the ceiling was riddled with PVC from restrooms above, and bulky columns made a challenging floorplan. Also, it needed to be built within three months. SPACE designed and served as general contractor to make the process quick and seamless. The team added a serpentine banquette at the front, and it is topped by an antique light fixture. The bar dominates the south side of the space, and a raised area across from the bar functions as stage and overflow seating.

PVC pipes were disguised with a Cocoanut-Grove-style fabric treatment, and it gives a sense of place to the stage. Classic artwork is on the walls, and doorways and tile feature the exotic, Arabesque shape. The result is a mix of new and old that pays homage to the grand theatre next door.

Black tile surrounds the bar, and a custom carpet that uses the colors from the Fox Theatre’s carpet creates the dining area.

The fabric streamers that frame the stage cover white PVC pipes from restrooms upstairs.
